The Process and Applications of Synthetic Biology

In today’s society, there is the constant push in the science field to discover or create something new that will redefine society’s outlook on a certain subject. Most look to uncover large discoveries, but this experiment looks toward the microscopic level. Synthetic biology is a very useful tool that can lead to milestones in the science field. Synthetic biology is the design and construction of new biological parts, devices, and systems. It focuses on the whole system of genes and gene products to extend and modify the behavior of organisms and engineer them to perform new tasks.(Andrianantoandro) Synthetic biology has to be done in a specific way to achieve the desired product. The process begins with synthetic biologists using resources and machinery of host cells. They will modify the cells themselves as well as engineer devices for the cell. It is very important that the product is reliable and predictable. This can be achieved by statistically using large number s of independent cells or by synchronizing individual cells through intercellular communication. Intercellular communication makes each cell more predictable and reliable, and can coordinate tasks across heterogeneous cell populations to yield highly sophisticated behavior. Therefore, multicellular systems are more reliable in performing complex tasks.(Andrianantoandro) Although synthetic biology is still an up and coming field, there are applications in society that are used today.
